Learning to win is usually the point, but learning to lose is equally important. Besides the practical learning process, we also touch on behavior. Games in today's show include Catan Histories: Settlers of America, Bezzerwizzer, 10 Days in the Americas, and Catan: Cities and Knights.

Pulp Tamers,

Great episode on losing! The discussion around the difficult task of teaching children that you can only progress if you challenge yourself against better opponents reminded me of a Seinfeld episode. In this episode, Kramer has signed up for karate classes and tells the gang how he’s the best student in the class. Eventually, they go to see him, and we get the visual gag of seeing Kramer towering over the five- to eight-year-olds in the class. Your discussion also reminded me of the wisdom I heard over and over again as a martial arts student: invest in loss. I liked the idea that you should seek out people who could defeat you, and use that defeat as an investment in your own progress and knowledge.
Games allow a parent or teacher to help children develop the social skills of winning or losing graciously. And, perhaps, how much more rewarding it is to win without cheating!
Thanks, as always, for the hard work on behalf of our hobby.

PS: I talk a bit about these topics on a recent blog post:
